This
module uses the FTDI FT245BM chip
The
USBMOD4, is a second generation, low-cost integrated module for transferring
data to / from a peripheral and a host PC at up to 8 Million bits (1 Megabyte)
per second. Based on the FTDI FT245BM USB FIFO – Fast Parallel Data Transfer
IC, it’s simple FIFO-like design makes it easy to interface to a CPU (MCU)
either by mapping the device into the memory / I/O map of the CPU, using
DMA or controlling the device via I/O ports. The USBMOD4 offers a complete
plug and play solution making it ideal for rapid prototyping and development.
In
order to make the USBMOD3/4 detect under any operating system, you
will need to connect some module pins to each other as mentioned in the
datasheet. Otherwise
the module will appear dead, this is because of the different powering
options which can be used.

The
chip it's based on is very very nice and support is also nice. Also it
has native support under Linux(kernel 2.4 and above). Appears as an RS232
port to the system. I've been using adapter cables using this chip and
it's my favorite(even MPLAB will run a Picstart+ off a USB port with it!).

I haven't
use this board but I have used the chip, Its dead easy to use , the pc
just sees it as a serial port so you can access it with hyperterm or mscomm
in VB Kevin
